The idea behind this product is flexibility
and simplicity. It can be treated exactly like turf, laid out as needed
and left to grow and flourish. The only requirement for the carpet or "Enviromat"
is it needs to be placed such that the soil layer
can retain the required moisture without drowning the plants. Apart from that, provided enough
moisture is available, the mat can be left entirely alone. The actual mat itself is basically a layer
of soil, mixed in with recycled and crushed brick dust, to create a solid,
compact bed for the plants. Underneath this is a finely woven plastic
mesh, that forms the base of the roll, and helps bind the soil together.
It also stops the plants taking root beyond the roll, so if you ever want
to move the carpet, you simply pick it up and place it where ever you
wish. The advantage of such a simple design is
that it is amazing versatile. Using only a sharp knife, you can cut out
which ever shape you want or need, meaning the carpet can be used for just
about anything. ... flexibility ... simplicity ... versatility ...
Possible Uses There are a whole range of possible uses
for the rolls, from small touches, to complete landscaping solutions. The carpet was originally developed as a
roof-covering, and as such, is extremely effective as a means of adding an
element of greenery to your roofing, from birdhouses
and rabbit hutches to conservatories. One step down from this, the carpets can
even be used vertically! Thanks to the strength of
the plastic fibre mesh, the carpet can be mounted
against a wall, although extra support and irrigation are required.

... gives colour and variety all-year round ... Maintenance There is a small amount of preparation
required to get the most out of the mat. You must ensure that water is
available but that the mat is also well drained. A water-proof barrier
maybe required (such as a layer of polythene) to stop moisture being lost,
and also as a root-barrier, to avoid either weeds coming up through the
mat, or the mat's own roots digging down too deep. In conditions where
moisture is not readily available, a moisture retention mesh may also be
advisable. Once this is all setup however, the mat can
be left alone. If you wish to trim it, then simply use a pair of scissors
or a sharp knife, or even mow it. ... once setup, the mat can almost be left alone ...

The
carpet can also be used as a lawn replacement, or as a supplement to an
existing lawn, to cover up manhole-covers for example. This can further
extended to include pond edging, where the mat's ability to be cut and
shaped really comes into play.
... useful for covering unsightly garden features (e.g. manhole
covers), roofs or even pond edges ...
The
mats are home to plants known as 'Sedums'
from the plant group
'Crassulaceae.' They are tolerant of most well-drained soils, and
prefer well-lit or slightly shady locations. The actual plant varieties
used include: Sedum album, Sedum acre, Sedum reflexium, Sedum
sexangulare, Sedum spurium, which combine to give colour and variety
all-year round.
